06 Sep WTF is Pilates?!
My main man Joe was a German physical trainer and founder of The Pilates Method. With a background in gymnastics, martial arts, circus performing, and boxing, he spent his early years training police schools in Scotland Yard and his later years professional dancers in New York. “Contrology” as it was originally called, related to the use of the mind to control muscles, focusing attention on core postural muscle that help to keep the body balanced and provide support for the spine.
Pilates has developed and evolved allot from its original days. Joe (being quite the inventor), while teaching his method to wounded soldiers in WW1, used springs he removed from hospital beds to help develop techniques to increase their range of motion (some peeps were bedridden). This equated to faster recovery times, stronger individuals, and happier campers. It was from these devises that Joe developed the Pilates Studio equipment that is still used today: Reformer, Cadillac, Wunder Chair, Spine Corrector and Ladder Barrel.
Why should I do Pilates?
The pilates benefits of a regular program are endless. Think stronger core, better posture, lean long muscles, ease of movement in daily life, balance and flexibility…. Oh yes and it can be quite the challenging workout too! You see Pilates exercises train several muscle groups at the one time, and if you have ever done a Pilates class by a fully qualified instructor you will totally get it! And let’s not forget fitness leads to happiness. Happy body = happy mind, Simple!
